The Maids
Recognised as a classic, The Maids, on the surface, is a tale of how two maids plot to kill their beautiful but insensitive mistress. Jean Genet’s work also dwells on the psychology of the subservient, an important theme even in today’s so-called egalitarian times. When The Maids/Les Bonnes was presented for the first time at the Theatre de l’Athenee in Paris on April 19, 1947, the action was set in 1900 and the maids were played by adolescent girls.
Diary Of A Madman
“No other story of Gogol’s is so packed with comedy as Diary Of A Madman, and yet this is a tragedy,” said a Soviet critic of this Russian novelist’s work. Russian writer Nikolai Gogol’s tale tells of how a downtrodden minor civil servant, Poprishchin, is trapped by his position on the social scale. He falls in love with the empty-handed daughter of his director, who is totally out of reach, being above his station. Poprishchin, however, pitches forth for her quite hopelessly and meets his fate. This short story has been worked into a one-man drama for this production by William Teo.
