TheatreWorks presents TLAB – a new programme of residences for individual Singaporean artists who are initiating international processes.
TLAB: 01 First, Second and Final Interphase With Zai Kuning
The residency will be fulfilled by the ‘INTERPHASE’ with a public audience, and each ‘INTERPHASE’ will be free. Too much is presently pegged onto the amount that the audience has to pay to experience an arts event. This leads to expectations which tend to kill the artistic process. TheatreWorks perceives TLAB as a community development programme which brings the international into Singapore, and hopes that the ‘INTERPHASE’ will encourage the notion that the development of international, challenging creative expression is a responsibility shared by an open audience and a provocative artist.
TLAB: 01 First Interphase With Ang Gey Pin
The road to encountering the ‘gilgamesh’… physical and vocal presentations from three weeks of work sessions with Singaporean artists.
TLAB: 01 Island Project – Developing New Art (A Laboratory For Sonic Investigation With Joyce Koh)
An island for the creation of music. ‘The Island Project’ creates an environment to investigate and experiment with an ensemble sound made up of instruments from different traditions, such as the er-hu, cello, and pipa. The project is a platform to experiment with different combinations of these instruments. The objective is to find an ensemble sound which can be developed into an established instrumental genre. Such a composite sound will also be reflective of a voice pertinent to Singapore.
This project is the brainchild of artist-in-residence at TheatreWorks Dr Joyce Bee Tuan Koh. Together with nine Singaporean musicians, she will present in two INTERPHASEs the musical experiments she has worked on as part of the TLAB programme.
