Conceived by Mark Lim, this installation is an attempt to materialise Woods&Woods designer Jonathan Seow’s wish to link the past, present and future of fashion through the reinterpretations of used clothing.
‘look back away from the glare’ consists of a video transposed within an artificially constructed living room, made visible only through peepholes. The nature of the installation is such that the viewer is forced to look into one space through a small hole, only to be redirected outwards into a space which does not necessarily exist. Additionally, the viewer is surrounded by an audio recording, consisting of individuals reciting an excerpt from one of Dr Seuss’ poems, ‘Oh The Place You’ll Go’. In doing so, Mark Lim explores the extent of our willingness for comfort and compliance and illustrates the discourse between what is and what could be by converging elements of reality into one single spot, yet never permitting complete unity amongst the various components. The audio, as a disembodied element, serves as a subconscious projection which reinforces the notions put forth by the living room space.
