A new theatre piece written by Leow Puay Tin, workshopped and directed by Ong Keng Sen in collaboration with conceptual artist Matthew Ngui. For sixty people each night, theatre is held in a century-old shophouse in the heart of Chinatown. This saga of family, traditions and change will unfold through the struggles of an immigrant Chinese family — a widow, her six sons, her daughter, and their families. A visual, sonic and sensory journey through rooms of yesterdays and tomorrows. This is possibly the last time that audiences will be able to see this house in its original state, as it has been earmarked for redevelopment. With a stellar cast and an intriguing performance site, The Yang Family continues TheatreWorks’ fascination with site-specific work. It also continues to blur the line between theatre, installation art, video art, photography, sound sculptures, dance, and architecture.
