Watching The Clouds Go By is staged as part of TheatreWorks’ Directors’ Laboratory Project. The Directors’ Laboratory is a year-long practice training programme for new directors. It provides a conducive environment for the directors to work hands-on on their project. It trains directors in the skill of resource management – overseeing the various resources, including the actors, playwrights, and technical/production team. TheatreWorks believes this is one of the most effective ways to teach directing. Other projects introduced under the Directors’ Laboratory include The Four Trunks, Sammy Won’t Go To School, The Way Of Violence and the Theatre-in-Education programmes, such as Over The Wall and The Silent Cry. Audience participation is a feature of the Directors’ Laboratory — the audience is encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions on the staging of the play. An informal discussion session with the director will take place after each night’s performance. Your suggestions may have an effect on the shape and design of the play.
